SC gas prices fall by more than 12 cents in a week

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Gasoline prices in South Carolina hit their lowest levels since February last week, according to GasBuddy.

The company that tracks gasoline prices says the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in South Carolina is $2.90 per gallon as of Monday morning. That price is based on GasBuddy’s weekly survey of more than 3,000 gas stations across the state.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said the national average has fallen for four weeks in a row leading up to Labor Day, giving Americans “one last chance to hit the road since gas prices aren’t as big a factor.”

In South Carolina, prices are 26.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 45.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy, South Carolina is now one of eight states with an average price below $3 per gallon.

The survey found that gasoline prices in South Carolina ranged from $2.57 to $3.54 – a difference of nearly a full dollar per gallon.

As of Monday morning, the lowest price in the Tri-County area was $2.69 per gallon at gas stations in North Charleston and Summerville.

The national average price of gasoline fell 6.2 cents per gallon last week, averaging $3.30 on Monday. The national average is down 20.7 cents per gallon from a month ago and is 49.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to data from GasBuddy, compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports from over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

“These numbers will look better week by week as we move into fall,” De Haan said.

The national average price of diesel fell 3.2 cents last week to $3.67 per gallon, a multi-year low.

GasBuddy will release its Labor Day travel forecast on Tuesday, which De Haan said will include “more good news about how many millions of dollars Americans will save compared to last year by taking a road trip.”
