In the end, it worked out well for both sides. However, for a while it looked like the San Francisco 49ers would lose wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. In fact, they were close to trading him, according to a Sunday report from Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

On Monday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter provided further insight during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” Schefter revealed that the 49ers, frustrated with Aiyuk’s hold-in, gave the receiver an ultimatum.

“Did you know that Brandon Aiyuk got the five-day letter in mid-August that he had to practice or he wouldn’t be able to play this year?” Schefter said.

He further explained the five-day letter, saying, “When you get a five-day letter, it means you better get back to practice, otherwise the team has the right to put you on the list and you lose the year. That’s happened before.”

Of course, it sounded like the 49ers had reached a point where they were OK with trading Aiyuk. They were reportedly on the phone with the Pittsburgh Steelers to finalize a deal when Aiyuk decided to sign the contract extension offered by the team.

After practicing just a few times last week – his first on-field practice with his teammates since February – Aiyuk is scheduled to play tonight against the New York Jets.
