Seahawks-Patriots, NFL Week 2: Live game updates, highlights, scores, recap

Seahawks-Patriots, NFL Week 2: Live game updates, highlights, scores, recap

The Seattle Seahawks have won their first home game under Mike Macdonald, now they want to win their first away game with their new head coach.

This is a special home game for the New England Patriots. Not only is it the home debut for rookie head coach and former Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, it’s also a celebration of the 2014 team that denied Seattle a repeat Super Bowl appearance. Many of the players from that team (including, yes, Malcolm Butler) will be in attendance at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. The 2024 Patriots started the game off strong with an upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Massachusetts is supposed to be a place of celebration. It would be a shame if the Seahawks ruined such a momentous occasion…

As usual, this is a live roundup of updates, with a full recap and highlights once the game is over. The paragraph you see now will be gone once the game is over. This is more of a running commentary separate from the game threads (where you still comment during games!), and regularly refreshing this page will show the latest information. Stay tuned!

1st quarter

The Seahawks won the coin toss and gave up possession, allowing the Patriots to get to the ball first. Rhamondre Stevenson’s first two touches gained eight yards. Jacoby Brissett’s third attempt ended in a sack by Boye Mafe! Three and out right there.

Seattle picked up a first down through Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but a blown bubble screen, a terrible sack by Laken Tomlinson, and a throw by JSN on 3rd and 15 were incomplete. The Pats had good field position at their own 40 after Marcus Jones’ punt return. It took Jacoby Brissett just eight plays to break through Seattle’s defense and find former Washington Huskies star Ja’Lynn Polk for his first NFL touchdown.

The Seahawks responded immediately and quickly. Geno Smith found JSN for two more catches and then threw a 56-yard touchdown to DK Metcalf despite a failed coverage.

2nd quarter

New England embarked on a long drive that lasted from the end of the first quarter to the beginning of the second quarter. Jacoby Brissett and Hunter Henry turned into the 2024 versions of Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. A 15-play, 59-yard drive ended in the red zone thanks to a tighter defense and better pressure from the front four. Leonard Williams drove Brissett out of the pocket for a throwaway and the Pats retook the lead with a field goal from Joey Slye.
