Sean McVay: Game circumstances led to skewed RB replays in favor of Kyren Williams

The Rams selected running back Blake Corum in the third round and planned to use him to split duties with Kyren Williams, but that didn’t happen Sunday night.

Williams had 21 touches (on 18 turnovers). Corum had none. That’s because Williams was on the court for 91 percent of the offensive snaps (71 total). And Corum was on none.

So what happened?

“I think every game is going to be its own unit,” coach Sean McVay told reporters Monday, a day after the Lions’ 20-26 overtime loss. “It was a very unique situation because when so many of our (offensive) linemen were injured, it limited some of the options — basically, we couldn’t run our game plan. We really had to change things up in the middle of the game plan. When there are unforeseen things, you go with guys you trust and know. I think the way some of the drives unfolded, where there were long breaks in between … I think that’s why our rotation of running backs and tight ends reflected like that. Colby Parkinson played 69 snaps. I think Kyren played 71, if you look at it. I want to get Ronnie (Rivers) involved a little bit more. I also want to be able to include Blake (Corum) … (B)ased on how the game turned out, it was very unique for a lot of different reasons, probably none of which are what you’re really looking for, but that’s not how we envisioned the rotation.”

As Simms noted on Monday PFTLiveInjuries on the offensive line forced the Rams to replace the running game with the short passing game. Ultimately, the Rams had 23 running attempts (three of which went to receivers) and 51 passing attempts (49 throws and two sacks). That’s a 68.9/31.1 percent split.

Regardless, the thrown-together, spontaneous game plan almost worked. Trailing 17-3, the Rams took a 20-17 lead—and had a chance to slam the door shut before the Lions forced overtime, repeatedly shoving the ball down the Aaron Donald-less defense’s throat to win with a walk-off in overtime on the opening drive.
