Sebastian benefits from new commercial flights at Treasure Coast International Airport – Sebastian Daily

Sebastian residents and visitors may soon have a new option for air travel as St. Lucie County launches commercial passenger service at Treasure Coast International Airport, with the first flights scheduled to begin next year, officials say.

A critical step toward that goal is imminent, as the county will receive its Part 139 certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in just a few weeks. This certification is essential for airports that serve commercial airlines.

Cathy Townsend, chair of the St. Lucie County Commission, said once the county has 139 certification, it can open for business.

The county is currently in negotiations with at least two airlines, including a low-cost carrier. In addition, a pilot training facility is being built at the airport in partnership with American Airlines.

To meet the needs of passengers, renovations are being carried out at the airport to expand the seating and baggage areas.

The possibility of commercial flights has caused excitement among local businesses in Sebastian and the Treasure Coast, who believe that improved air access would significantly boost tourism.

Currently, most guests arrive in Sebastian via West Palm Beach, Melbourne or Orlando airports, which requires a longer drive.

If commercial flights become a reality, Treasure Coast International Airport would be the second commercial airport between Melbourne and West Palm Beach, alongside Vero Beach Regional Airport.

Breeze Airways will begin passenger service in Vero Beach in early 2023.

The expansion of commercial air traffic at Treasure Coast International Airport is expected to boost the local economy and improve regional connectivity.
