Secret word used by Spaniards to insult British holidaymakers | World | News

Locals in Spain have started branding Brits who go out drinking on holiday with an offensive term. The slang word ‘guiri’, pronounced ‘guee-ree’, is actually a Basque term meaning someone ‘blond’ and ‘fair-skinned’.

However, the term can also be applied to holidaymakers who go out and make noise, usually while consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.

According to The Sun, Spaniards have been known to shout “Hola Guiri” at tourists, which can make some people feel unwelcome.

The publication states that resort residents are less likely to brand visitors as “Guiri” if they integrate into the local culture.

Discussions about this term are taking place in the wake of protests against overtourism taking place throughout Spain.

At the beginning of the year, there were demonstrations on the Canary Islands under the slogan “Respect our country”. Demonstrators also took to the streets on the Balearic Islands and demanded controls on tourism.

A new date has been announced for another protest rally in Mallorca, which could cause Britons to worry about their summer holidays.

The organization “Less Tourism, More Life” was behind the demonstration on 21 July in Palma, where locals took to the streets to protest against overtourism, and held its fourth public meeting yesterday, 21 August.

Around 50 people attended the meeting in Lloseta, a small municipality in the district of Raiguer on Mallorca.

September 27, the UN World Tourism Day, is being considered as the deadline for the next protests.
