Security area at the Democratic Party Convention in Chicago will affect traffic from Monday

CHICAGO (CBS) — The Democratic Party Convention will take place next week in Chicago and with it a series of Security measures This will impact traffic around both venues. Security perimeter expansion will begin at 6 a.m. Monday with the erection of fencing around the United Center and McCormick Place, officials say.

There will be parking restrictions, temporary street closures, and full street closures if necessary. Full street closures will also be implemented when the containment area is completed. Closures will begin at 10 p.m. Friday, August 16 at McCormick Place and at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 17 at the United Center.

Residents are advised to allow additional travel time during setup and the week of the convention, which runs from Monday, August 19 to Thursday, August 22.

The city administration also recommends that citizens use public transport for all major events.

Below you will find the preliminary schedule for the expansion.

United Center – Temporary expansion of security fencing

  • Monday, August 12th – 6:00 a.m. No parking (on the verges) in all built-up areas along the security perimeter.
  • Monday, August 12 – Saturday, August 17 — 8:00 a.m. Fence erection and installation begins, expect rolling lane closures and full street and alley closures if necessary.
  • Saturday, August 17 – United Center road closures along the exclusion zone will begin at 7:00 p.m. (safety measures will be in place).

United Center Fencing: Construction and Installation – Parking Restrictions and Road Closures:

  • Monday – Expansion in Washington: Damen to Wood, Wolcott between Washington and Warren; Paulina: Monroe to Adams
  • Tuesday – Expansion to Washington: Damen to Wood; Wood: Washington to Warren; Warren between Wood and Paulina
  • Wednesday – Expansion to Damen: Washington to Warren; Warren: Damen to Hoyne; Hoyne: Warren to Madison
  • Thursday – Expansion on Adams: Women to Wood
  • Friday – Expansion on Madison: Hoyne to Seeley; Seeley: Madison to Adams; Damen: Adams to Jackson; Monroe: Wood to Paulina.

Takedown at the United Center

  • Friday, August 23rd – 1am dismantling begins. Once dismantling is complete, the streets will be opened.

McCormick Place – Temporary expansion of security perimeter

  • Monday, August 12th – 6:00 a.m. No parking (on the verges) in all built-up areas along the security perimeter. 9:00 a.m. fencing begins, expect temporary full closures of the verges.
  • Tuesday, August 13th – Friday, August 16th – 00:01 The construction of the fences begins. Expect that verges and entire streets and alleys will be closed if necessary.
  • Friday, August 16 – 10:00 p.m. McCormick Place road closures begin, limited perimeter (safety measures will be implemented).

McCormick Place Fencing: Preparation and installation of parking restrictions and road closures:

  • Tuesday – Expansion at 24th Place: Michigan to McCormick Place; Indiana: 24th Place to 24th St; 24th St; Michigan to Indiana; Michigan: 24th Place to 25th St.; MLK Drive: McCormick to 25th St.
  • Wednesday – Expansion in Indiana: 24th Place to Cermak; Cermak: Indiana to McCormick; 25th St at MLK Dr & McCormick
  • Thursday – Expansion at McCormick: Cermak to MLK Dr.

McCormick Place shutdown

  • Thursday, August 22nd – 6pm Dismantling begins. Once it is completed, the streets will be opened.
