NEW YORK CITY – Thousands of people gathered in New York City on Wednesday morning to commemorate the victims of September 11, 2001.

Throughout the ceremony, there will be six minutes of silence to commemorate the moment the first plane flew into the World Trade Center, then the second, the collapse of the towers, the plane’s collision with the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93.

Street closures in NYC after September 11th
The following streets will be closed for the 9/11 ceremony on Wednesday:
- Areas bounded by Barclay Street to the north, Rector Street to the south, Broadway to the east, and West Street to the west (all inclusive)
- Liberty Street between West Street and South End Avenue
- Albany Street between West Street and South End Avenue
- West Thames Street between West Street and South End Avenue
- South End Avenue between Liberty Street and West Thames Street
- Battery Place between West Thames Street and 3rd Place
- 3rd place between Battery Place and Little West Street
- Little West Street between 3rd Place and Battery Place

Meanwhile, New York City is preparing for its annual Tribute in Light. The Tribute in Light consists of two beams of light rising four miles into the sky from Lower Manhattan, representing the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
9/11 Tribute in Light returns
The Tribute in Light will return to the skies over New York City as the city prepares to mark the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The beams will be visible within a 60-mile radius of Lower Manhattan. The installation will light up the night sky from dusk to dawn on September 11.

September 11th is not an official holiday, but is designated as Patriot Day each year.
Push to make September 11 a national holiday
The 23rd anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks is just days away. As we prepare to mark this important day, there is a new effort to make September 11th a national holiday. FOX 5 NY’s Jodi Goldberg reports.
“Today we remember all the heroes forged in the hours, days, and years following that terrible morning of September 11, 2001 – ordinary Americans who demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness amid terror, smoke, and flames,” the proclamation said. “Together, their bravery helped prove to our nation and to the world that what those terrorists most hoped to hurt can never be broken: our nation’s character.”
How many people died on September 11
More than 2,600 people died in the World Trade Center, 125 people died in the Pentagon, and 256 people died in four airplanes after terrorists hijacked the planes and converted them into guided missiles.
