BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (WFSB) – A teenager was arrested Wednesday night after police were alerted to a viral social media message threatening to harm schools in Bridgeport.

The identity of the arrested person could not be established because he or she is a minor.

Police did not disclose whether they were enrolled in a school in Bridgeport.

Earlier Wednesday, Bridgeport Public Schools announced a two-hour delay and an increased security presence at the district’s schools.

Police said enhanced security protocols remained in place despite Thursday’s arrest, adding:

“The Bridgeport Police Department would like to assure our community that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority and that there will be a strong police presence at our schools. We would like to thank our Patrol Division, Detective Bureau and our federal partners for their cooperation in this case.”

As part of the increased safety measures, no visitors are allowed at any district school and no outdoor activities are taking place.

Additionally, Bridgeport Public Schools Superintendent Carmela Levy-David released a statement prior to the arrest, saying, “We understand that this situation may cause fear and anxiety in our community. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to school administration or local authorities. Your cooperation and support are critical to ensuring the safety of our school community.”

Officials said they plan to release new information as it becomes available.
