SF Giants place Patrick Bailey on injured list

SF Giants place Patrick Bailey on injured list

The San Francisco Giants don’t have much room for error as they try to climb out of the hole they dug themselves in the first few months of the season and get to the postseason, and that room for error just got a lot smaller.

Shortly before Tuesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, the Giants announced that catcher Patrick Bailey had been placed on the 10-day injured list, effective Monday, due to a strain of his right oblique muscle. His place in the roster will be taken by catcher Jakson Reetz, who was recalled from AAA Sacramento.

Bailey was originally in the starting lineup for Monday’s game, but was withdrawn at short notice due to sideline tightness after experiencing discomfort in the batting cage before the game. After the game, he said it was nothing to worry about and that he had been removed from the roster as a precaution, which prompted me to write an absolutely terrible headline: Patrick Bailey’s illness is very mild.

This will be a lesson for me (it won’t).

While Bailey’s injury is obviously not very mild, fortunately it does indeed appear to be a mild injury that will result in an injured list, and the team expects him back fairly soon.

Bailey has been in the middle of a crisis lately, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that’s a good thing. Although he hits like a pitcher (since the All-Star break he’s 11-96 with two doubles, five walks and 24 strikeouts), he still plays the best defense in the major leagues, so his presence will be missed. But the positive is that we can hope that a little break will rejuvenate him and he can finish the season with the hitting power of the player he was in the first few months.

Get well, Patty Barrels. We will miss you.

When do the Giants play today?

The Giants host the White Sox at 12:45 p.m. PT to conclude their three-game series.
