Sheriff warns of risks in vacation rentals after fugitive arrested in Jensen Beach

Sheriff warns of risks in vacation rentals after fugitive arrested in Jensen Beach

After a multi-state manhunt that ended in Jensen Beach, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is warning of the dangers posed by traveling criminals.

MCSO arrested 33-year-old Justin Najdawi, who said he was traveling through Arkansas, Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Florida to evade an arrest warrant for sexual assault and possession of child pornography.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told CBS12 News that Najdawi is wanted in several states.

“Colorado was looking for him for some serious sex crimes involving minors, including an incapacitated adult female, but Texas is also looking for him for similar charges,” Sheriff Snyder said.

According to MCSO, the MCSO, working with the FBI’s Rocky Mountain Safe Street Task Force, FBI Miami/Ft. Pierce Bureau and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, found that Najdawi was living in a vacation rental on northeast Marguerite Street near downtown Jensen Beach. Neighbors in the area told CBS12 News the rental was an Airbnb.

Sheriff Snyder says Najdawi is what is called a multi-state offender.

“These are criminals that people should really be concerned about because they travel from state to state and are obviously involved in the most heinous crimes: child pornography and then sexual assault of adults,” Snyder said.

The sheriff’s office arrested Najdawi around 4 p.m. Thursday night as he left his Airbnb near downtown Jensen Beach to get food.

Sheriff Snyder says this case should serve as a warning to those who rent out their properties.

“You can never be 100 percent sure. When you rent vacation rentals, you’re not going to do a background check on everyone who comes in. So there’s a chance you’ll get someone like this coming in and staying with you,” Snyder said.

He believes Airbnb owners should do their due diligence before renting out their property.

“We don’t expect people to come to the sheriff’s office and do a background check with the Federal Crime Information Center,” Snyder said. “The least you should do is check to see if the person you’re renting to online is a good customer. If you don’t have a good feeling about someone, follow your instincts.”

Eva Digioia, a resident of Jensen Beach, has lived in the neighborhood where Najdawi lived for years.

She says several of her neighbors are converting their properties into Airbnb.

“There are three Airbnbs right in this block of eight houses,” said Eva.

She says the news of Najdawi’s arrest makes her nervous given the numerous rental properties in her area.

“Now I’ll look around before I get home or whatever, now that you know something like this can happen,” Eva said.

The MCSO reported that Najdawi was in Jensen Beach for five days before he was caught.

They told CBS12 News that if he had been here longer, they might have been working on a case of their own.

Najdawi is being held in the Martin County Jail awaiting extradition to Colorado.
