Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith issued a statement from Apalachee High School Wednesday afternoon. The GBI confirmed four people were dead and nine others were hospitalized following a shooting at the school earlier in the day.

Smith did not provide any further details about the casualties or the number of injured.

The sheriff’s department received a call about an active shooter on campus at 9:30 a.m., Smith said, and he limited most of the information to several injured people and said they had a suspect in custody. He asked for patience as the investigation is still fluid.

“First and foremost, I want to support our community. I want to express our condolences to our communities, our school system, our children and our parents who had to witness this today,” Smith said. “What you see behind us today is obviously something evil.”

The students were taken out of the school and onto the football field, where they waited until they were handed over to their parents.

As parents arrived to pick up their children, a line of cars stretched far down Haymon Morris Road.

Smith asked the Georgia State Patrol and the GBI for assistance in the investigation.

Smith did not provide details on how many people were injured or who the suspect was.

“It’s very active and constantly evolving,” Smith said. “Every minute, what we find evolves.”

Smith will try to provide more information around 4 p.m., he said.

“We are in the process of reuniting students with their parents, which is obviously chaotic right now,” Smith said. “But we want to respect them and their privacy. I want to thank the state, federal and local authorities who were here today. The numerous local emergency services and firefighters who were here today. I ask you again to support Barrow County Schools, Apalachee and our authorities. It will take several days before we get answers as to what happened and why this happened.”
