Shooting near Wichita elementary school leads to curfew

WICHITA, Kansas (KWCH) – Update 10:25 am: Wichita police said the family reunification pickup will occur at the north entrance of Cessna Elementary on 45th Street South.

The fee is $259. Police ask parents who wish to pick up their children to come to the school and contact officers at the assembly point for further instructions.

Update: USD 259 made the following statement:

“At approximately 9:20 a.m., an incident involving two adults occurred in front of Cessna Elementary School. Shots were fired, multiple police officers were involved, and the area in front of Cessna Elementary is now inaccessible due to an active crime scene.

Immediately following the incident, Cessna Elementary School was placed on lockdown (no one is allowed to enter the building) and students and staff are safe in their classrooms. We know this is a scary situation. We will provide parents with information as soon as possible. Parents are asked not to come to Cessna to pick up their children at this time as our school remains on lockdown for the time being.”

A Wichita elementary school is on lockdown while police investigate a shooting nearby. Two people were injured in the shooting, one seriously.

A secretary at Cessna Elementary said the school was on lockdown, but the shooting was not school-related and students were safe.

Cessna Elementary is located at 2101 W. 45th Street South in Wichita and the shooting occurred at the corner of 47th and Clarence.
