Shop in Fordham reopens on weekend after fire outside store

Charo Food Corps was open Monday after a fire broke out outside the store just before 6:45 a.m. Sunday.

The FDNY told News 12 that four units responded to the fire and were able to bring it under control in less than an hour.

Firefighters said they needed personnel in protective suits to remove a battery from the fire scene.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Eddie, an employee of Charo Food Corps, told News 12 he saw the fire coming from one of their e-bike charging stations they use for deliveries. Eddie says the company recently took precautions on its own after seeing an increase in battery fires.

“The store was really paranoid about the bikes and batteries exploding, so about a year ago they had a special box made to charge the bikes outside the store,” Eddie said.

Eddie tells News 12 that things would have turned out differently if the fire had been inside.

β€œIt would be over,” said Eddie.

The New York City Department of Transportation is currently debating whether to allow businesses to set up battery swapping and charging stations outside of their buildings. A New York City Department of Transportation official told News 12 the goal is to regulate these batteries and place these stations outside of buildings to prevent incidents like this one.
