The highly anticipated opening of the Marshalls store in Mahoning Township took place Thursday at the Carbon Plaza Mall.
A crowd of impatient shoppers gathered outside the 22,000-square-foot store at 1241 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive East to celebrate its opening.
Suellen Cook of Lehighton was the first customer to walk through the store with her shopping cart and said she was excited to see such a beautiful new business in the area.
“I’m thrilled, so excited,” Cook said. “We needed this.”
Vanessa Maddock and her daughter Haven Reed of Jim Thorpe excitedly browsed the clothing racks in search of bargains.
“It’s great. The selection of clothing is incredible,” Maddock said. “Now we don’t have to drive (as far).”
Holly Lang of Lehighton said she just moved here from Reading and added the store is a welcome addition.
“I’m just glad we have a place to buy clothes and household goods,” Lang said.
Laura Prutzman and her son Leo Prutzman of Lehighton also gave the store a rave review.
“I’ve never been to Marshalls,” Laura Prutzman said. “I was up at 6 a.m. and checked your (Times News) website (to find out when the store would open).”
Ten-year-old Leo was visibly impressed as he picked out several pairs of jeans and a shirt for his back-to-school shopping.
“I like Halloween and fall decorations,” said Leo, who will soon be entering fifth grade at Lehighton Elementary Center. “And the modern stuff.”
Daniel Devitt of Lehighton said he attended the grand opening with his wife and son.
“I just think it’s good for the area,” Devitt said. “I think it’s going to do well, but I miss the cinema.”
Cassidy Kelly, marketing director at Marshalls, said in an email, “We are very excited to offer our amazing selection of high-quality merchandise to shoppers in Lehighton.”
Kelly added that the new store will not only provide a new shopping option for local residents, but will also create approximately 60 full- and part-time jobs in the area.
In addition, Kelly said Marshalls presented a $10,000 donation to the Victims Resource Center Thursday morning to celebrate its new location in Longview.
The Marshalls store offers a fresh selection of branded and designer fashion at discount prices as well as a wide range of products from fashion and cosmetics to household items.
Marshalls has over 1,200 stores in 48 states, DC and Puerto Rico. Since the first store opened over 40 years ago, the Marshalls name has become synonymous with value shopping.
