Should you use AI to create your resume? 64% of recruiters are in favor

It can be nerve-wracking to neatly summarize all of your professional, managerial, and extracurricular experience into one package—especially since the resume is a key component of the job search. Fortunately, artificial intelligence (AI) can make the task more manageable, and it turns out most hiring managers aren’t opposed to it.

Adobe surveyed over 500 hiring managers and 500 job seekers in the US to learn more about the resume process. Not surprisingly, many of the candidates surveyed have already used AI in their resumes: 28% of respondents admitted to using AI in their resume writing.

This AI use case met with limited resistance from hiring managers: 64% supported job seekers using AI on their resumes.

Before you use AI to write your resume, you should know that 13% of hiring managers said they would automatically disqualify a resume written using AI. However, for better or worse, there is currently no reliable AI checker on the market, so as long as you double-check for plagiarism, a hiring manager shouldn’t notice.

Hiring managers also report that they encounter spelling or grammatical errors in resumes, a lack of relevant experience or skills, too many job changes in a short period of time, significant unexplained gaps in the resume, and overly colloquial language.

With the help of artificial intelligence, users can easily avoid these red flags. For example, a user can upload their resume to ChatGPT and ask, “Can you correct spelling and grammar, eliminate overly colloquial expressions, and add skills that make the resume more meaningful?” ChatGPT then outputs a version optimized with all of these components.

Best practices that job seekers should follow include limiting their resume to one page (preferred by 55% of hiring managers), using PDF format (preferred by three-quarters of hiring managers), and emphasizing special skills (recommended by 29.68% of hiring managers).
