Shrewsbury location is among the stores to be closed

SHREWSBURY – LL Flooring’s Shrewsbury location is set to close permanently after the company, formerly known as Lumber Liquidators, announced a companywide closure of all locations as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, according to a letter from CEO Charles Tyson.

The site is located on Route 20, less than a mile west of the Route 9 interchange.

Last month, the company began winding down another location in central Massachusetts, in Leominster, one of 94 stores it planned to close at the time.

More than 300 stores, including the Shrewsbury store, remained open while the Richmond, Virginia-based company looked for a buyer to continue operating the business.

But in Friday’s letter, Tyson wrote that negotiations “did not result in an offer.”

“It is with this heavy heart that we announce that we will begin winding down LL Flooring’s operations and closing all of our stores,” Tyson wrote. “This is not the outcome we were all hoping for.”

Since 1993, LL Flooring has specialized in the sale and installation of various floor coverings, including wood and carpet, according to its website.

At its peak, the company operated over 400 stores in 47 states.

When the company first announced its bankruptcy in an Aug. 11 letter, it attributed its situation to declining home sales and high interest rates that contributed to a slump in the home improvement market.

In the same letter, the company said it had received $130 million in financing through a Chapter 11 program, with funds provided by existing lenders, most notably Bank of America.

Tyson’s letter said the company would begin clearance sales at all remaining stores on Friday.

“The sales will take place over the next approximately 12 weeks, with the timing of the closures varying from store to store,” Tyson wrote.
