Sicamous pump track is frequently used during final work

Although some finishing touches are still needed, the Sicamous pump track is open and in good use.

At the Committee of the Whole on August 14, Operations Manager Darrell Symbaluk provided the Council with an update on the final weeks leading up to the UCI Pump Track World Championship qualifying round on September 7.

“It’s really well used, we see activity up there all the time,” he said, adding that they’re working to fix a visibility problem. “We built some seating areas because when that track was finished, we realized there’s no good viewing point anywhere nearby because it’s in a hole.”

To fix that, the public works department brought in some cement blocks and fill to fill up some areas and installed two sets of five-tier bleachers that the district already had, which seat about 50 people, and a three-tier bleacher at the other end of one lane. Railings are on order and will be installed as soon as they arrive.

“So we have some really good seating and a good standing area on the side,” Symbaluk said.

The city council praised the work done and added that the facility had turned out really well and was being used extensively by both local residents and people from neighboring communities.

“It’s just amazing how many people come out. It’s just fun to go over and watch the little rascals. Even some adults like the course,” said Councilman Gord Bushell, adding with laughter that he “hasn’t tried it myself yet… I need to get a helmet.”
