Sign up for new Target store in Norwalk, grand opening announced

NORWALK, CT — A sign for a new Target store recently went up at 680 Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk, and store officials hinted that a grand opening date will be announced in the near future.

The new Target is set to open in the large space that formerly housed the city’s second Walmart store, which closed in November.

In an email Friday, a Target spokesperson confirmed plans to open a Target store at that location.

“We are excited to offer new guests in the Norwalk community an easy, affordable and convenient shopping experience with this new Target store,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson also announced that more details about the store, including an opening date, would be announced in the near future.

“As we get closer to the store’s opening, we will be able to share more specific details,” the spokesperson said, “including how the shopping experience will be tailored to guests in the store and when the grand opening will take place.”

The city did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

Construction walls and the new sign were put up at the future Target store on Thursday afternoon. The shopping center on Connecticut Avenue also includes a Home Goods department store.

Plans for the new store, which will be approximately 11,250 square feet, were first submitted to the city’s Planning and Zoning Department in March 2023.

In August 2023, Norwalk spokeswoman Michelle Woods Matthews said Target’s permitting team informed the city that they were in the process of submitting their construction plans for zoning and building permits and that they had been in contact with the Planning and Zoning Board regarding signage.

That same month, Walmart confirmed that its Connecticut Avenue store and its attached pharmacy would close in early November.

Walmart continues to operate its store at 650 Main Avenue in Norwalk, near the Wilton border.

Mayor Harry Rilling said in an earlier statement that it was sad that Walmart employees would lose their jobs as a result of the closure. However, the city’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism will work closely with Target and try to find new employment opportunities at the planned Target for those who could lose their jobs as a result of the store’s closure.
