Simon calls a performance despite injury the “definition of courage”

Simon calls a performance despite injury the “definition of courage”

America’s Got Talent was blessed with another inspiring Golden Buzzer moment!

On the September 3 episode of the hit talent show, Sebastián and Sonia, an aerialist duo from Barcelona, Spain, proved that the show must go on after Sonia injured her arm during rehearsals. Despite the setback, Sebastián performed a solo number to Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood.”

As he twirled, spun and performed gravity-defying stunts with aerial scarves, the crowd gave Sebastián a standing ovation and watched in awe. When he finished his routine, Sonia joined him on stage and the pair kissed before receiving praise from judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel.

“A lot of people would have given up,” Simon said, before asking rhetorically, “How do you do this two-person performance with one person and then make it incredible?”

“Honestly, I think most people would have just said, ‘You know what, we had an accident and that’s why we can’t carry on.’ But you did the opposite, you carried on,” he added.

As the fans’ cheers grew louder, Simon first noted that Sebastián deserved a special mention, not “just because” of Sonia’s accident, but because his performance was the “best reaction we’ve had so far,” before pressing the coveted golden buzzer of the evening.

Golden confetti began to rain down and Simon entered the stage to hug the delighted duo and congratulate them on Sebastián’s performance.

When host Terry Crews asked Sebastián how he was feeling, he replied, “Right now, we feel like it was all worth it. It was a really hard day, I only had three days to put this performance together and I just wanted to do my best.”

Terry then turned to Simon, who explained why he thought the duo deserved the evening’s highest award.

“That’s the definition of courage. You don’t give up, seriously,” he said, before giving fans a glimpse of the brief words he exchanged with the pair. “I just asked if you were going to make it to the finale. And she said yes, so that was really the best thing tonight by far.”

With the Live Show Golden Buzzer in their pockets, Sebastián and Sonia go straight to the America’s Got Talent Finale. They join AIRFOOTWORKS, who received Howie’s Golden Buzzer for the live show in last week’s episode.

On August 6, NBC announced that AGT would change the live show format by introducing the first ever live show golden buzzer. For the first time in the series, all four judges will have the opportunity to send acts straight to the finals with a live show buzzer during the four-week quarter finals.

After the quarter-finals, 12 acts will advance to the semi-finals where they will compete for the top six spots based on audience votes. These six acts will then compete alongside the four live show Golden Buzzers in the two-day final, which begins on Tuesday 17 September and ends on Tuesday 24 September.
