Independent artist Skylar Gudasz has released the music video for her song “Lovestorypastlife,” which appears on her upcoming album COUNTRY, will be released tomorrow, August 9, 2024, on Perseids Records. The video, which was shot at the 150-year-old Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station in the Outer Banks, also serves as the album’s cover.
The tone and mood of the song blend seamlessly with the cinematic quality of the clip, as the captivating track is a solemn reflection on a faded love, with Gudasz singing: “Who are you bringing your flowers to now?” You don’t come by / Who do you bring your flowers to now? / As the days pass / The seasons play on your face / Is our love story now just a past life?”
The place is significant for Gudasz, who had a vision long ago that eventually became reality. She says: “The album cover for COUNTRY was derived from the video for “Lovestorypastlife.” The Chicamacomico Life Saving Station is located on the Outer Banks, a series of remote barrier islands in North Carolina where I used to live that have long been notorious for shipping disasters because of the shallows. These life saving stations, of which only a handful remain standing, were formerly manned by a crew that would search the beach for ships in distress during storms, hurricanes, and all seasons. The drill team pictured on the album performs the rescue drill that has been practiced at the station since its inception. The “cannon” you see was actually created with the intention of saving lives—it shoots a rope to the ship that attaches to the mast so that a buoy can be towed between the ship and the shore. This ended up being the perfect visual representation of the album—the ever-changing boundary between land and sea, people and nature, and the wilderness at the heart of COUNTRY.’
Gudasz adds: “I visited this incredibly beautiful station as a child and had long dreamed of filming something here. As my film crew became involved, it became clearer that our vision would include the drilling team if they were willing. Shooting was one of the most rewarding creative experiences of my life. Our film crew was all women, the incredible Sandra Katharine Davidson, Cameron Laws and Lisa Ramsden, all of whom have connections to the wider area, and we were able to be on site and in the conservation area on Pea Island for several days. The Chicamacomico Association generously gave us pretty free rein to explore the site and their work artistically. And we will be working together again to do a concert on September 19th.th on the lawn in front of the sea at the lifeguard station to celebrate its 150th anniversary.” The local Island Free Press published an article about the concert, which gives a better insight into the History and Gudasz’s passion for the landmark and the surrounding area.
