World number one Jannik Sinner reached his first US Open semifinal on Wednesday with a four-set win over 2021 champion and two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner, who is looking to win his second major title of the season after the Australian Open, won 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 and 6-4 and will now face Briton Jack Draper, ranked 25th in the world, for a place in the final.

Sinner, 23, is the only top-10 player to make it to the semifinals. No. 12 Taylor Fritz will face fellow American Frances Tiafoe, ranked 20th, in Friday’s other semifinal clash.

Italian Sinner had defeated Medvedev from two sets down to win the Australian Open title before the Russian took revenge in another five-set match at Wimbledon.

“It was very hard, I knew it would be very physically demanding,” Sinner said.

“It was strange in the first two sets. Whoever managed to break got going.”

Sinner said he was looking forward to the duel against Draper.

“Off the court we are good friends. He is playing an incredible tournament and has not lost a single set.”

Sinner swept through the opening set on Wednesday with a couple of breaks, with the Russian making 15 unforced errors while the Italian made just six.

However, fifth-seeded Medvedev turned the tables and equalized the quarterfinals with a double break.

In a back and forth, Sinner took revenge by winning the third set in just 30 minutes.

Medvedev patiently worked for two break points in the sixth game of the fourth set, but fended off both of them.

This allowed Sinner to take the initiative with the decisive break to 4:3 and seal the victory.

Medvedev had to fend off 10 of 15 break points in the tie, while his dream of reaching his 10th Grand Slam semifinal was dashed by 57 unforced errors.
