SLED investigates police officer-involved shooting in North Charleston

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – South Carolina law enforcement is investigating after the response to a hit-and-run crash ended in an officer-involved shooting.

North Charleston police reportedly responded to Big T’s gas station in the 6900 block of Stall Road around 9:50 p.m. Friday for a hit-and-run crash.

Harve Jacobs, spokesman for the department, said officers were investigating the incident on the side of the store when customers told the officer that an “aggressive man” was waving a gun outside the store.

The officer approached the man, who police say began waving his gun in the air. The officer ordered him to drop the gun, at which point the man began pointing the gun at people in the parking lot as well as at the officer, according to witnesses.

Jacobs said the officer fired his weapon an unknown number of times, shooting the suspect.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The name of the officer involved was not released by SLED or the police department.
