Social security makes significant changes to the application process

Social security makes significant changes to the application process

For some people filing Social Security and SSI claims, the process may soon become easier.

Starting in December, first-time claimants ages 18 to nearly 65 who have never been married and are simultaneously applying for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will have access to a simplified online iClaim application process.

According to the Social Security Administration, the new site will use “user-reviewed questions in plain language, pre-set answers where possible, seamless step-by-step transitions, and more.”

Officials said that the online application would shorten the time required to submit the application and the processing time for the initial decision on the application.

“Over the past year, we’ve asked many applicants and advocates — as well as our staff — how we can make the SSI application process simpler and more straightforward. Now, we’re taking an important first step to do just that,” Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley said in a statement. “The people in our communities who need this critical safety net deserve the dignity of an application process that is less burdensome and more accessible than what we have now, and we’re committed to making that vision a reality in the years to come.”

Information from the streamlined process will be used to simplify in-person, telephone, mobile and paper-based application processes. The agency said it also plans to develop a simplified SSI application for children.

SSI is a program that provides monthly benefits to adults and children who are disabled or blind and have limited income, as well as seniors age 65 and older who meet financial requirements. Some SSI recipients also receive Social Security benefits. According to the agency, more than 7.5 million people receive SSI benefits, with an average monthly payment of $622.
