Socorro and Ysleta school districts use substitutes to bridge teacher shortage

Socorro and Ysleta school districts use substitutes to bridge teacher shortage

According to a report by Teachers of Tomorrow, there are currently 55,000 teacher vacancies across the country, but two of the three largest school districts in El Paso report a different observation.

“Obviously, as a district, we are struggling with declining enrollment numbers, so we are not seeing as many vacancies as we have in the past, which is a good thing,” said Celina Stiles, acting director of human resources for the Socorro Independent School District.

However, there is still a shortage.

There are currently 105 vacancies in SISD, compared to 22 vacancies in Ysleta Independent School District.

Both districts are using substitute staff to fill these gaps.

“For the 22, 23 grades that don’t have full-time teachers in the classroom, our top priority is to find certified substitute teachers. Because the best thing we can have is a trained teacher in the classroom,” said Bobbie Russell-Garcia, YISD’s human resources director.

KFOX14/CBS4 reached out to the El Paso Independent School District, but they were unable to provide the number of teaching vacancies in the district in time for this report.
