Some Restaurant Week offerings will continue for another week in Arlington and FC

Although Summer Restaurant Week is now over, some restaurants in Arlington and Falls Church are continuing their specials a little longer.

Sabores Tapas on Columbia Pike, SER in Ballston and The Falls in Falls Church are among several area businesses extending their discounts on multi-course brunch, lunch and dinner menus even after Restaurant Week officially ends last weekend.

“It’s a breath of fresh air for the business because we’ve seen a big increase in footfall in the restaurant. People are coming in for the first time and trying it out, and some regular customers are taking advantage of the savings,” Sabores Co-owner Carlos Olarte told ARLnow.

The tapas spot at 2401 Columbia Pike — which Yelp ranks among the top 100 restaurants in the U.S. — started its third Restaurant Week a week early and will end it a week later, this Sunday, Aug. 25. From now until then, the restaurant will continue to offer its “giant” three-course lunch for $25 and its five-course dinner for $40, Olarte said.

For a first course, Olarte says diners shouldn’t miss the “Pan con Tomate” plates – rustic bread with tomatoes and Spanish cheese or Serrano ham. But the most popular Sabores dish throughout Restaurant Week was the arepitas. The fried corn cakes are topped with Cotija cheese and chicken or beef and can be ordered as a second course for lunch and dinner.

At 370 W. Broad Street in Falls Church, The cases also serves tiered menus through Sunday. The restaurant, which opened last fall, comes from the same team behind The Liberty Tavern, Lyon Hall and Northside Social.

The Falls describes itself as the “new America,” offering “a seasonal approach to the Mid-Atlantic.” Through Sunday, three-course lunch and dinner are $25 and $40 per person, respectively.

General manager Will Murphy recommends the heirloom tomato and watermelon salad as a starter, served with feta cheese and a watercress and balsamic glaze.

“(It’s) really refreshing, it’s really bright, it’s very summery,” Murphy told ARLnow.

For his main course for lunch or dinner, he would “always choose the classic Falls Burger with American cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, caramelized onions and sauce on an IPA bun,” Murphy said.

“I think our burger is pretty good… but not just burgers, I really like the brisket sandwich,” Murphy said. The smoked sandwich is offered as a second course at lunch. Murphy called it “a little unconventional” because of its toppings, like queso.

These main dishes complement other offerings like the vegetarian red quinoa bowl for lunch and shrimp and grits, grilled salmon and hot honey roasted chicken for dinner.

For the final course of both meals, customers can choose between a chocolate mousse with fresh whipped cream, basil and peach or a berry praline shortcake with hazelnut whipped cream on a cornmeal biscuit.

Sister restaurants Lyon Hall And Liberty Tavern also extend the Restaurant Week offers until Sunday.

Finally, at 1110 N. Glebe Road in Ballston, the Spanish restaurant SER will continue to offer lunch for $25, dinner for $40 and wine pairings for $25 per person through Monday, August 26, owner Sergio Ungureanu told ARLnow.

The optional $25 wine pairing includes three 120ml glasses of premium Spanish wines — some of which normally cost $25 for a single glass, Ungureanu said.

“We start with a light, fresh, refreshing white wine, the grape is called Albariño,” he said. “For red wine, the grape is called Mencía. It comes from a region called Bierzo.”

The last wine served with dessert is a sweet Moscatel.

As for the dishes, the chilled melon gazpacho starter was well received by Restaurant Week customers, he said, and for the second course, “the hanger steak was the crowd favorite.”

The steak is served with roasted beets and garnished with a red wine reduction.

As “Platos Principales”, the second course, customers can also try grilled salmon with mushroom sauce and sautéed spinach or roasted chicken with quinoa salad.

Ungureanu said he was pleased with the “good feedback” SER received during Restaurant Week, as the restaurant looks to improve its menu and offer new dishes. The restaurant, like many others, extended the original offers due to its popularity.

“It was wonderful,” said Ungureanu. “Every time we do it, we get busier than usual.”

Olarte and Murphy shared that view, saying they hoped to continue the business upswing by further extending Restaurant Week.

“Summer is a little quieter overall in Falls Church, I would say,” Murphy said. “We’ve definitely noticed an uptick in business, especially during lunch hours, oddly enough… which has been great.”

Olarte said it is common practice for restaurants in the Washington area to extend contracts, and at Sabores, this is particularly “beneficial” since the ongoing construction along the Pike “isn’t helping matters either.”

“So this year we decided to just do it a week earlier,” Olarte said. “Since it’s common for restaurants to extend an extra week, why not?”

Arlington’s own Restaurant Week, another opportunity for special deals on restaurant dining across the county, begins October 14.
