WINDER, Ga. (TND) — Four people were killed in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect has been arrested. The shooter who opened fire is believed to be a 14-year-old male, a law enforcement source told CNN. It is unclear whether or not the suspect was a high school student. The suspect is alive and in custody, the agency said in a post on X.

Law enforcement sources also told CNN that over 30 people were injured in the shooting. GBI confirmed that nine were taken to a hospital. It is unclear how many of those injuries are gunshot wounds; the information is preliminary and subject to change.

The high school was locked down around 10:20 a.m. Wednesday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is in the process of reuniting students with their families.

According to the White House, President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation.

“President Biden has been briefed by Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall on the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, and his administration will continue to coordinate with federal, state, and local authorities as we receive more information.”

During a press conference on Wednesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland said he was devastated for the families affected by the tragedy and offered federal assistance to the local community.

“I want to address the tragic shooting that occurred this morning at a high school in Winder, Georgia. We are still gathering information, but the FBI and ATF are on the scene working with state, local and federal partners,” said AG Garland. “The Department of Justice stands ready to provide any resources or assistance the community of Winder needs in the coming days.”
