South Florida thieves target cigar shop after first plan goes up in smoke

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida. – Thieves struck twice in one night, but when their first plan went up in smoke, they took whatever they could find at a Fort Lauderdale cigar shop.

According to the owner of the Ash and Vine Cigar Shop, the two perpetrators first tried to break into a nearby T-Mobile store, presumably because they were after expensive electronic items.

When they couldn’t get in, they went to the cigar shop next door and stole a few lighters instead.

A video shows two men breaking into Ash and Vine, 31 N. Federal Highway, early Saturday morning. The two men stuffed lighters into a green shopping bag and attempted to take it.

One of the men wore a shirt around his neck, but his accomplice was not disguised.

“They took a bunch of lighters and luckily they didn’t go crazy,” said Alvaro Cornavaca, owner of Ash and Vine.

Cornavaca says the thieves didn’t get the good stuff – the cigars in the back – but replacing the broken glass and lost merchandise will still cost a pretty penny.

“They practically took the goods away from here,” Cornavaca said.

When asked about the value of the damage, Cornavaca estimated: “A couple hundred. I’d say right now there’s about $500 worth of lighters. The glass is another huge expense.”

On Monday, Cornavaca and his staff spent time restocking shelves and fixing the glass. He said they were lucky that the security system immediately alerted him and police.

No arrests were announced, but Cornavaca said the crooks were not wearing gloves and police were able to detain officers.

Anyone who recognizes the perpetrators is asked to call Fort Lauderdale police.
