Diving certificate:

  • SpartanNash announced Monday that it has hired Erin Storm as its new senior vice president and chief marketing officer.
  • Storm will oversee various aspects of the company’s marketing function, including the private label portfolio, retail marketing programs, e-commerce and digital experiences, shopper insights and customer engagement.
  • The appointment of the new chief executive comes during a difficult fiscal year for the food solutions company, which is looking to continue a “merchandising transformation,” CEO Tony Sarsam said during a quarterly earnings call earlier this month.

Diving insight:

Storm brings nearly 20 years of experience in grocery and CPG marketing to her new role at SpartanNash.

Before joining the company, Storm spent most of her career at Kellogg Company in a variety of leadership roles, including senior director of marketing and senior director of sales. Last October, she was promoted to vice president of marketing at Kellanova, a Kellogg spin-off company, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Storm most recently held the position of vice president of commercial strategy at Kellanova, the announcement said. The release noted that she has taken the lead on leading brands and that her creative team at Kellogg’s won national awards and recognition for a Pringles commercial for the 2024 Super Bowl.

“(Storm) will play a central role in increasing brand awareness across our retail banners and OwnBrands portfolio, gaining market share and leveraging consumer insights for product innovation,” Sarsam said in a statement.

As SpartanNash’s revenue continues to decline year-over-year, the company is focused on strengthening and innovating things it “can control and cannot stand still in this environment,” Sarsam told investors earlier this month, noting that the impact of declining wholesale business with Amazon had hurt performance in recent quarters.

The growth of SpartanNash’s private labels, which Storm will now oversee, is one of the areas the company continues to focus on to return to a positive sales trend. Earlier this year, the company announced the launch of its new private label called Finest Reserve by Our Family, which features pasta, sauces, dressing and more.

Storm is the latest announcement from SpartanNash management. In early June, the company appointed a new vice president of merchandising and pharmacy.
