Sports Update: Eagles football teams win home openers

The Eden Prairie High School boys soccer team defeated Shakopee 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Aerie Stadium. This was their first home game and improved their record to 2-0-0.

First team captain and striker Nam Tran scored the only goal of the game 4:25 minutes before the end of the first half.

Eden Prairie’s defense, led by captain Nathan Louwagie, held off Shakopee’s offense, giving Louwagie back-to-back shutouts. The Eagles defeated St. Louis Park 3-0 in their season opener on Thursday night.

Next: Eden Prairie travels to Buffalo (2-0-0) to face the Bison on Tuesday, August 27th at 7 p.m.

The Eden Prairie High School girls soccer team also had a successful first home game, defeating Shakopee 3-2 at Aerie Stadium on Saturday afternoon, improving their record to 2-0-0.

New head coach Jorge Oconitrillo noted after the game that the game against Shakopee was affected by sun, heat and humidity. The first half was sunny and scoreless, but when clouds rolled in at halftime, five goals were scored in the second half.

The Sabers took the lead early in the second period, but veteran Eagles defenseman Gabriella Lainhart quickly equalized to make it 1-1. Veteran forward Emily Langfield gave Eden Prairie a 2-1 lead with 25:11 left, but Shakopee tied it 2-2 just under three minutes later.

Junior captain and defender Leah Gschwendtner scored the game-winning goal with 11:16 minutes left, firing a powerful shot from 25 yards out that beat the Sabres goalkeeper.

Eden Prairie also won its first game of the season on Thursday night, defeating Blaine 1-0 in an away game.
