Square One Markets in Hamburg secures nearly million for electric vehicle charging station

Sai Hamburg, LLC, a Hamburg company, has received nearly $1 million in federal funding to install a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently announced that the company will receive $945,555 as part of the latest round of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding.

The charging station will be located at Square One Markets near Exit 29 on I-78, a prime location that will benefit both residents and travelers passing through the region. This investment is part of a larger $7.1 million initiative by the Shapiro administration to improve EV infrastructure across the state.

This funding is one of ten selected projects in nine counties in Pennsylvania, all aimed at filling the remaining gaps in the state’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). The goal of these projects is to ensure that charging stations along the regional corridors are no more than 50 miles apart to provide reliable access for electric vehicle drivers.

“With every investment in EV infrastructure, we are making clean transportation more accessible to Pennsylvanians,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “These awards will help us move to the next phase of EV adoption.”

This funding supports Pennsylvania’s ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote cleaner transportation options. It also underscores the state’s commitment to boosting the local economy, as the project requires at least 50% of the work to be performed by workers who live within 50 miles of the site.

Pennsylvania is making progress on EV infrastructure. Over 1,800 miles of designated AFCs are now supported by NEVI-funded chargers. The new charging station in Hamburg will help fill the remaining gaps in these corridors and move the state closer to certification as “fully built out.”

Supported by the federal bipartisan infrastructure bill, the project will not only provide the necessary infrastructure for the growing number of electric vehicles, but also spur local job creation. The NEVI program requires recipients to match at least 20% of their own funds, ensuring a shared investment in the future of clean transportation.
