Standoff in Waukesha: Suspect taken to hospital

WAUKESHA, Wisconsin – A suspect armed with a knife barricaded himself in a garage Saturday morning, and when Waukesha authorities failed to free the suspect from the garage, they used tear gas, stun guns and sniffer dogs to apprehend him.

Waukesha police were called to East Broadway because a person had a nervous breakdown and was yelling threats in the caller’s front yard, a news release said.

When police arrived at the scene, the person who had called had locked the front doors and walked away. The suspect was in the yard, ran into a double garage and barricaded himself inside, but left one of the roller doors open.

The WPD called the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department for an armored car and additional officers, the WPD Deployable Technology Unit for a second armored car and tactical officers, and called the WCSD canine unit.

Negotiators attempted to speak to the suspect using a PA system and a “throw phone,” which is an inexpensive prepaid phone that can be thrown into the garage for the suspect to use.

Officers spent four hours negotiating with the suspect and attempting de-escalation techniques, but to no avail. CS gas – a type of tear gas – was fired into the garage.

The suspect left the garage to escape the gas, but continued to not cooperate with officers, so officers fired non-lethal ammunition. The suspect dodged the ammunition and ran back into the garage.

According to the press release, officers no longer had the opportunity to peacefully remove the suspect.

They sent a sniffer dog into the garage, where the suspect resisted the dog and officers. One of the officers used a taser on him.

The taser worked well enough that officers were able to arrest the suspect and take him to Waukesha Memorial Hospital, where he was medically evaluated and eventually transported to the Waukesha County Jail.

He was the only one injured and faces charges of domestic violence, the press release said.
