After their season-opening victory in Brazil, the Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) will face the Atlanta Falcons (0-1) tonight on Monday night football.

Not only is it the Eagles’ first home game at Lincoln Financial Field, Birds fans will also see a familiar face before kickoff – former center Jason Kelce, who is part of the ESPN team. Monday evening countdown Pre-game show this season.

Kelce, who made a memorable debut, Monday Night Football last week, will begin tonight on Xfinity Live! before heading to the Linc to finish the broadcast from the sidelines. That could lead to complaints of bias and favoritism toward Falcons fans, but Monday evening countdown Host Scott Van Pelt plans to go into more detail on tonight’s show.

“We all come from somewhere. Everyone knows who they played for,” Van Pelt previously told The Inquirer. “There’s no reason to pretend they don’t have passion for this team.”

It could also be the only chance Kelce gets to accompany the Eagles this season. For the first time since 2020, the Birds are only available for one Monday Night Football game, although they could be postponed to a second game due to new TV rules the NFL implemented last season.

Kelce isn’t the only familiar face Birds fans will see before kickoff tonight. Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles, who will officially retire from the Eagles on Monday, will serve as the team’s honorary captain during the coin toss. He will speak to reporters at a press conference before the game, which is scheduled to take place at 6:15 p.m.

“I don’t think words can describe what he means to the city. When you talk about Rocky, he was basically the Rocky of quarterbacks in the NFL,” Kelce said last week on 94.1 WIP. “It’s like a Cinderella story. He’s a guy who went unnoticed and didn’t have success at other stops. It feels very much like he was destined to play for the city of Philadelphia.”

The Eagles will only play once this season Monday night football, However, there is a chance the Birds could end up back on ESPN thanks to the NFL’s decision to expand flexible scheduling last season.

The NFL will be able to flexibly schedule games between Weeks 12 and 17 (there are no Monday Night Football game in Week 18). If games are moved from Sunday to Monday and vice versa, the NFL must notify teams at least 12 days before the game.

The NFL also has the ability to stream games in and out of Amazon’s Football on Thursday eveningHowever, only two changes are possible during the season and these must be made between weeks 13 and 17 and no later than 28 days before the match.

Last season, the Eagles’ Week 15 game against the Seattle Seahawks was moved from Sunday afternoon to Monday night – a first in NFL history. The move was not without controversy, as fans were forced to change their travel plans and hotel bookings and take time off work just to attend the game.

“You’re kind of helpless,” said Daniel Matson, who told the Inquirer that the postponement cost him about $1,000. “Either you sell your tickets or you change your plans.”

Editors Jeff McLane, EJ Smith, Olivia Reinerand Jeff Neiburg will be calling the action live on Inquirer.com. For game notes and observations, visit Inquirer.com/Eagles. Don’t forget to subscribe to our free Sports Daily newsletter.
