STATEMENT BY MAYOR RAS J. BARAKA

ON THE SHOOTING WITH POLICE APPRECIATION ON HAWTHORNE AVENUE AND CLINTON PLACE

“Last night, a police-involved shooting occurred at Hawthorne Avenue and Clinton Place during a police operation involving a vehicle stolen in Connecticut and two adult male suspects from Queens, New York. While the Attorney General’s Office conducts a thorough investigation, I can share that after one suspect was arrested and taken away, another suspect jumped into the car and attempted to flee. Officers attempted to stop him. A struggle ensued and shots were fired. During the incident, the vehicle struck a patrol car and then struck Hawthorne Elementary School.

“One officer was hospitalized with a sprained ankle, a second officer was treated and released, one suspect is in custody and under arrest, and the other suspect is hospitalized in critical condition with a gunshot wound.

“This is a tragedy for everyone involved. When an incident like this happens, it is traumatic for everyone involved and its impact has an impact on the entire community. Our focus is to provide comfort, help and recovery to all those affected and to prevent the type of unlawful acts that lead to these types of incidents.”
