Steelers put promising DB on the injured list

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed defensive back Grayland Arnold on the reserve/injured list, the team announced Thursday. If Arnold remains on the injured list, his season would be over.

Arnold, who had been working as the first-team nickel cornerback this week, left practice Wednesday with a calf injury. He was carted off the field. Beanie Bishop replaced him on the first-team line, where Bishop had been working the first two weeks of training camp.

The Steelers signed Arnold as a free agent on June 4, 2024. Arnold spent the last three seasons as a member of the Houston Texans.

Arnold nearly signed with the Steelers last season and even verbally agreed to a contract, but a last-minute move by the Texans kept him in Houston. Arnold played in eight games last season, with most of his snaps coming in the slot. He played a career-high 143 defensive snaps in 2023 and tied a career-high with 13 tackles.

Arnold was a key addition to the Texans’ secondary and played well, earning him a 71.4 grade from PFF.

After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles signed Grayland Arnold as a priority free agent and gave him a three-year contract. Arnold appeared in six games and played 82 defensive snaps as a rookie, but spent most of his time on the practice squad.

Before the 2021 season, the Eagles waived Arnold and he was signed by the Texans and signed to their practice squad. He spent the next three seasons in Houston, appearing in 20 games for the Texans.

Overall, Arnold has played in 26 career games and started once. He has recorded 24 total tackles and defended one pass.

In a corresponding move, the Steelers signed defensive back Kiondre Thomas.
