QUINCY – Stop & Shop will soon stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in all stores.

The Quincy-based supermarket chain has 360 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. Tobacco sales will end on August 31.

According to Stop & Shop, the decision reflects a “commitment to the good of the community.”

“Our responsibility as a grocer extends far beyond our shelves, and we are committed to taking bold steps to help our associates, customers and communities achieve better health outcomes,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a statement. “From our team of board-certified dietitians who serve our customers free of charge to our trained and trusted pharmacy associates, Stop & Shop aims to support the health and well-being of the neighborhoods we serve – and this exit from the tobacco business is another way to achieve that goal.”

“Cigarette buyback” at Stop & Shop

Stop & Shop is holding a “cigarette buyback” event at its Dorchester supermarket, 460 Blue Hill Ave., on Aug. 28. The first 100 customers to bring in an unopened pack or carton of cigarettes to exchange will receive a Stop & Shop gift card and $10 Nicorette coupons, as well as a bag of healthy snacks, mints and supplies to help them quit smoking.

“This is a step in the right direction towards ending the Influence on childrenand we know more can be done to reduce the burden of tobacco in our communities,” said Dr. Karen Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society, in a statement.

Other retailers that have stopped selling cigarettes in some or all stores in recent years include CV, WalmartWegmans and Price Chopper/Market 32. In Massachusetts, supermarkets with pharmacies are not allowed to sell tobacco products.
