Students complete new mural at Canandaigua Fire Station

Canandaigua, NY – Young artists in Canandaigua are putting the finishing touches on a city beautification project.

As part of the city’s Paints & Rec program, a mural is currently being painted on the exterior of the Canandaigua Fire Station on Main Street.

Last year, the group created a mural in Jefferson Memorial Park on Jefferson Avenue.

More than 150 students contributed to the giant screen this year.

“You don’t necessarily have to have experience. That’s what it’s about – learning how to paint a mural from start to finish,” explained Stefanie Allison, the course leader. “Learning how to prepare, how to paint, different blending techniques. We’re all in this together and it’s not just about the painting work – it’s also about building community and friendships.”

The project also gives students an insight into the region’s rich history.

“They learn about the importance of the fire department’s history and the community’s history. Just the fact that they are here in the city center makes them very proud,” Allison continued.

A grand unveiling of the mural will take place on Friday.
