Studio Ghibli re-releases official replica of Kiki's broom for budding witches

For the title heroine of the legendary classic by Studio Ghibli, Kiki’s little delivery service (1989), her magical journey would not have been possible without her trusty broom. Now Kiki fans have another chance to buy the live-action version in Ghibli’s official online shop.

Donguri Sora recently added his anime-accurate recreation of Kiki’s broom to his extensive digital catalog. As shown below, the broom handle is made of light bamboo wood, and Kiki’s famous red bow is attached to the center. In addition, the section where the bristles meet the wood is covered in black fabric bearing Kiki’s work badge. Unlike traditional brooms, Kiki’s broom is only about 900 mm (or 35.4 inches) long, making it short but also more practical for display purposes. According to the site description, it is intended to be placed on a windowsill or hung on a wall. Including taxes, the current retail price is 5,500 yen (US$37.51).

Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, wrote and directed Kiki’s little delivery servicean adaptation of Eiko Kadono’s popular novel of the same name. In the world of both works, young witches in training must spend an entire year away from home. On a clear moonlit night, 13-year-old Kiki sets off on her mother’s broom with only her cat Jiji, a radio, and a shoulder bag full of personal items. After flying all night, she eventually lands in a bustling seaside town called Koriko Village. Since flying is her only magical ability, Kiki decides to open a one-girl delivery service. Even with magic on her side, some jobs prove far more difficult than others. Armed with ingenuity, resourcefulness, and determination, Kiki takes on every challenge life throws her way. Notably, the film is set to return to U.S. theaters this October as part of Studio Ghibli Fest 2024—an annual theatrical program showcasing the studio’s most popular works.

Due to its overwhelming popularity Kiki’s little delivery service is one of the most featured franchises on Donguri Sora. Last month, the site also re-released its high-quality recreation of Kiki’s famous delivery bag. The film is also one of the few Ghibli films included in Donguri Closet’s exclusive rattan stick fragrance collection. Listed as “Kiki’s little delivery service Kiki and Tombo White Tea Dried Flower Reed Diffuser: This essential oil-based fragrance set pays homage to Kiki and her adoring boyfriend Tombo, a key supporting character in the film. Accordingly, the bottle itself is decorated with a watercolor-like image showing Tombo excitedly chatting with Kiki while she works.

Although Donguri Sora does not currently offer international shipping, its products can often be discovered through international e-commerce sites such as eBay. Studio Ghibli’s film library, which includes hits such as Kiki’s little delivery service, My Neighbor Totoro (1988), buckeye (1992), Whisperof the heart (1995) and Spirited Away (2001) is available on Max for viewers in the US and Japan. Netflix has made the films available in several other major territories, including Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
