Study on the sensible use of dredged material in Kings Bay

Study on the sensible use of dredged material in Kings Bay

The EA Engineering, Inc. and Marstel-Day contracting team recently completed field work to collect information to be used in strategic planning for the beneficial use of dredged material around the Kings Bay Naval Facility.

Commissioned by the U.S. Navy and led by the Army Corps’ Regional Sediment Management Center of Expertise, the team completed the dredged material wise use study in July 2024.

The team collected information on marsh elevation, enrichment rate, soil types, and plant and invertebrate species. This information, along with a comprehensive historical and future analysis of marsh conditions, will be used to strategize the beneficial use of dredged material around the marine facility.

USACE is managing the dredging and placement of all material from Kings Bay Channel and is working with the U.S. Navy and Taylor Engineering to identify short- and long-term options for profitably using the dredged material for wetland restoration and sediment reduction measures rather than placing the material in upland disposal facilities or transporting it to offshore disposal sites.
