HERKIMER CO., NY — The launch of the Veggie Van program in 2024 has proven to be a remarkable success, bringing fresh, locally grown produce to those in need. In the first month alone, the Veggie Van has provided access to fresh food to over 300 individuals who would otherwise not be able to drive to a farmers market. That number is expected to grow as the program continues to expand its reach.

Designed as a food supply intervention, the Veggie Van functions as a mobile market that brings fresh, locally grown produce to areas with limited access to farmers markets. With a focus on underserved neighborhoods, the Veggie Van program makes regular stops to ensure consistency and reliability. This approach is part of a broader effort to create healthier and more sustainable communities.

The key to the Veggie Van’s success is its commitment to removing barriers to access to fresh produce. The mobile market accepts various payment methods, including

  • SNAP/EBT (formerly known as Food Stamps)
  • Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks for seniors and WIC participants
  • Fresh Connect Checks (FCC) for veterans, military personnel and their immediate family members
  • Cash and credit/debit cards.

This inclusive payment system ensures that everyone in the community has access to fresh, nutritious food.

“The positive change toward a healthier and more sustainable community is inspiring,” said Cameron Burke, Cornell Cooperative Extension team member. “The Veggie Van program is a key strategy to make fresh, nutritious food more accessible to all, and we are grateful for the community support that has helped the Veggie Van become a successful model for improving food access in Herkimer County.”

The Veggie Van program is supported by UpMobility, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Herkimer HealthNet, and the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties.
