Summary | Cannon makes Rapids debut, Edwards opens MLS account in away loss to Sporting KC

The Colorado Rapids (14-10-5, 49 points) suffered their first regular-season loss since May 2022 and their first loss in a league game since July 17, 2024 against Sporting Kansas City (8-15-7, 31 points). Michael Edwards’ first MLS goal was the lone goal for the Rapids, who now turn their attention to Saturday’s home game against Toronto FC.

With the Rapids looking to secure a spot in the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs and Kansas City trying to keep its postseason hopes alive, everything was on the line on this beautiful Wednesday night in Kansas City. Colorado had won its first game against SKC in July and came to town with the goal of winning the regular season.

The game started slowly, with both sides trying to get going early. The Rapids created chances through possession, but the home team struck first after eight minutes.

After an attacking surge, a Kansas City cross found Alan Pulido with the ball at the top of the box. The striker then fired across his body into the bottom left corner of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Colorado threatened to fight back later in the first half but could not equalize. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen held firm and limited the damage, so both teams went into halftime with the same score of 1-0.

After the break, Kansas City scored again early. After four minutes, Pulido scored his second goal of the game to double the lead.

The hosts scored their third goal in the 69th minute. Erik Thommy shot into the bottom right corner around 20 minutes before the end and gave them a three-goal lead.

Six minutes later, in the 75th minute, the Rapids were able to reduce the deficit by one goal. After a corner kick, captain Keegan Rosenberry crossed to Edwards, who slotted the ball home for Colorado’s first goal of the night.
