Summerville’s annual Sweet Tea Festival returns on Saturday

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCBD) – Picture-perfect weather is expected this weekend for Summerville’s annual Sweet Tea Festival.

Steven Doniger of Summerville DREAM said the festival always takes place on the third Saturday in September. “On this day, we celebrate the birthplace of sweet tea, right here in Summerville, South Carolina.”

Doniger said there will be activities for kids and families, live entertainment, food trucks, vendors, artisans and plenty of sweet tea to enjoy.

“During the festival, you can vote for the best sweet tea in all of Summerville,” he said.

Sweet tea comes from Summerville.

“About 100 years ago or so, they brought the plants from overseas and did all the research necessary and developed tea plantations where they could grow and bear fruit,” he said. “And then the next logical step was to add ice and sugar. And before you knew it, you had sweet tea.”

In 2016, Summerville held the Guinness World Record for the largest bottle of sweet tea.

“We are the town that brewed the largest sweet tea. Over 2,000 gallons of sweet tea were brewed and served in one day,” Doniger said. “It’s a great honor for us to be in the Guinness Book of World Records. The jar, we call it Mason, is here in Summerville. You can come by and take a great photo with Mason.”

The festival will take place on Saturday from 2pm to 7pm. During the event, you can also enjoy free samples of sweet tea.

“The sweet tea contest is also free. We have about 15 locations throughout downtown and you can get a card with a voting card on it. You can go to any of the stations and there you get a free little 3-ounce sample of the sweet tea. You can try them for free and vote for the best sweet tea. Games and activities are free.”
