Summit Trail Running Series ends with the last race in Carter Park

Summit Trail Running Series ends with the last race in Carter Park

For most of the afternoon on Wednesday, August 7, it looked like rain might disrupt the final race of the Summit Trail Running Series at Carter Park in Breckenridge. However, as runners began warming up for the race, storm clouds continued to recede from the area, giving way to a chilly August evening.

With the race no longer threatened by lightning strikes or heavy rain, trail runners lined up at the starting line for the 9.84-mile endurance race that takes in the trails that tower over Carter Park and the town of Breckenridge below.

At 5:30 p.m. sharp, nearly 20 runners left the starting line and sprinted quickly across the grass at Carter Park. Leading the pack were the usual long-distance race leaders from Race Breck, John Rauen and Jared Burris of Breckenridge.

As in previous Summit Trail Running Series races, Rauen and Burris stayed together for most of the race before pushing toward the finish line together in the second half of the race.

Rauen ran down the hill with ease and crossed the finish line of the Carter Park Scurry as the long distance winner with a time of 1 hour, 3 minutes and 36 seconds. Burris soon followed in second place with 1:07:01, while Paul Timm took third with 1:11:09.

After being the first woman to finish in many of the series’ endurance races, Natalie Kalin now claimed another race title. She finished the race with a time of 1:13:41, placing fourth overall and the first female runner to finish the race.

Ryan Schrader finished fifth (1:16:36), Duncan Koehn sixth (1:17:21), Matt Desrosiers seventh (1:18:55) and Michael Shambarger eighth (1:19:27).

Michael Emery and Brooke Steinkopf rounded out the top 10, with Emery taking ninth place (01:21:52) and Steinkopf taking tenth place (01:26:02). While Steinkopf was the second trail runner to finish the race, Ceara Conroy rounded out the women’s podium, finishing her race just over the 90-minute mark with a time of 01:30:25, placing 13th overall.

Shawna Kollai followed Conroy in 14th place with a time of 1:33:05.

Fifteen minutes after the long-distance race, the trail runners of the 5.28-kilometer short-distance race began their ascent up the Sunbeam Trail. With their first steps, those vying for places at the top of the results list drew attention to themselves.

Leading the 25 runners was Summit Trail Running Series regular Tate Martinez of Dillon. With multiple wins this summer season, Martinez led Summit High School freshman Cooper Levi of Silverthorne onto the rocky trails, while Summit High School freshmen Danny Butler and Bodhi Adnan followed in Levi’s footsteps.

In a hard-fought battle to the finish line, 24-year-old Martinez narrowly took the win, while 14-year-old Levi battled to the finish line and took the silver medal. Martinez won the race in 26:37, with Levi following a second later in 26:38.

The final spot on the overall podium went to Scott Siriano of Dillon, who finished third in 28:59. Adnan finished fourth overall (30:36), Butler finished fifth (30:59) and Kira Deming finished sixth (31:47), the first woman to finish.

Following Deming were Thomas Beveridge in seventh place (33:27) and Mike Anderson in eighth place (33:45), before Jenny Wong of Dillon finished ninth overall (34:02) to take second place in the women’s category. Daniel Dunn was the last trail runner to make the top 10, finishing 10th overall with a time of 34:58.

Gloria Greenstein finished third in the women’s race and 11th overall (35:01), followed by Becky Peltier of Frisco in 12th place (35:08).
