Suspect arrested, teenager injured after shooting in Charleston mall food court

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – An Adams Run man is facing charges in connection with a shooting that occurred in the food court of a shopping center.

According to Charleston police, 19-year-old Nathan Mungin is accused of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and three counts of aggravated assault.

Around 4 p.m. on Friday, officers were called to the Citadel Mall for a reported disturbance, Sergeant Chris Stinson said.

Investigators said a single shot was fired during a large brawl involving several people in the food court.

A teenager was taken to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries, Stinson said.

When officers arrived at the scene, several people ran from the area.

Mungin was identified as a suspect and taken into custody.

Investigators concluded that the shooting was the result of an ongoing fight between several people.

Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker said he was grateful that no one was seriously injured in the shooting.

“(I) am grateful for the quick response of our officers in this situation. However, we must acknowledge the terrifying reality created by these senseless and inexcusable actions. Gun violence is never the answer to conflict and is and will never be acceptable,” Walker said in a press release.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Charleston police at 843-720-2422.

Following the shooting, the mall was closed for the rest of the day, but will resume normal hours on Saturday.

Mungin was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center. A photo of the admission was not immediately available.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
