  • Burtonsville retiree wins $50,000 on scratch card

BURTONSVILLE, MD — A retired Montgomery County school administrator is celebrating a $50,000 win she made by purchasing a Joker’s Wild scratch-off ticket that helped her pay off debt and achieve financial independence.

The Burtonsville resident, who retired several years ago and supplemented her income with a part-time job, regularly budgeted money for her favorite lottery games. Her gamble paid off when she purchased the $5 winning Joker’s Wild ticket at the Giant store at 12028 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring.

After purchasing the ticket, she took it to work and later scanned it using the Maryland Lottery app. Initially seeing a message directing her to visit a lottery location, she scratched off the rest of the ticket and was stunned to discover she had won the $50,000 grand prize. With the windfall, she was able to pay off her debts, increase her savings and plan a trip to Europe and a visit to her adoptive family in Kenya.

The Giant store that sold the winning ticket will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. The Joker’s Wild scratch-off game, which launched July 22, has six of the original eight top prizes remaining, along with over 830,000 other unclaimed prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
