Possible cyber attack has disrupted systems

What is the story

The Port of Seattle, which also operates Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac), has reported a “possible cyberattack.”

The alleged security breach was first announced on Saturday morning via X. The airport subsequently confirmed that there had been “certain system outages that indicate a possible cyberattack.”

The attack primarily affected websites and telephone systems and caused significant disruption.

Ongoing outages and recovery efforts

Late Saturday night, Sea-Tac Airport was still struggling with system outages.

The airport said: “There is no estimated recovery time and port teams continue to work to restore full operations.”

To mitigate the impact on travelers, the airport advised them to use airline apps for boarding passes and baggage tags and to allow more time to get to their gates.

The Port of Seattle website remains mostly offline

As of Sunday morning (Pacific Time), the Port of Seattle’s public web infrastructure, including its website, was still mostly offline. This information was provided by a TechCrunch Reviewing the port’s DNS records. The extent of the cyberattack and its potential impact are currently being investigated.

TSA confirms no impact on security processes

A spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) confirmed that despite the cyberattack and the resulting system outages, there was no impact on security operations at the airport.

This assurance comes as part of ongoing efforts to fully restore all affected systems and services.

Earlier this year, Joe Biden’s administration issued an executive order to improve cybersecurity in ports.

The latest problem occurred just weeks after a CrowdStrike software update triggered a global IT crash that resulted in flight cancellations and delays.
