Suspected natural gas explosion leaves two injured in Springfield

Two men were hospitalized after a house explosion in northeast Springfield.

According to the sheriff’s office, the explosion occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in the 3300 block of East Enos.

The two men, a 64-year-old and a 71-year-old, were working on a water heater when the house exploded around 11 a.m. on Aug. 13, according to statements made to the Sangamon County Sheriff at the scene.

Springfield Police, Springfield Fire Department and Grandview Police along with Ameren Energy responded to the scene because natural gas was suspected to have contributed to the explosion.

According to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department, the two men were taken by ambulance to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Springfield Fire Department said the fire was extinguished around noon and investigators will remain on scene for the rest of the day, said Amber Sabin, director of media relations for the city’s Department of Water, Light and Power.
