Swatting call forces evacuation of Walmart in East Brunswick

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – A swatting call forced the local Walmart to evacuate Thursday while authorities investigated, East Brunswick police said.

On Thursday at around 2:53 p.m., East Brunswick Police received a 911 call from an unknown person reporting a bomb in the men’s restroom at Walmart Supercenter.

Officers were immediately called to Walmart and management decided to evacuate the building as a precaution, police said.

A thorough search was conducted with the assistance of the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office canine unit.

Authorities concluded that there was no threat and classified the incident as a “swatting” incident, police said.

The term “swatting” describes a prank call to emergency services, usually reporting an immediate threat to human life in order to provoke a police and SWAT team response to a specific location.
