System of a Down and Deftones attract 50,000 fans at first concert series in Golden Gate Park

System of a Down and Deftones attract 50,000 fans at first concert series in Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Tens of thousands of music lovers flocked to Golden Gate Park again this weekend – just one week after Outside Lands.

This year, organizers of the popular three-day music festival launched a new concert series in the park.

“You can’t go wrong in Golden Gate Park and System of a Down. You can’t go wrong,” said Hilmar resident Melissa Gonsalves.

Systems of a Down and Deftones headlined the shows on Saturday night.

From chefs to milliners and more, hundreds of local vendors took center stage at Outside Lands 2024 in San Francisco.

“This is an epic show. I’m a huge Deftones fan,” said Spencer Toy, who traveled from Pleasanton.

The one-day, one-stage event drew 50,000 fans from across the Bay Area and beyond. Organizers said 90% of the crowd came from outside San Francisco.

“That means hotel rooms, restaurants, Uber, retail, taxes, all of that,” said Allen Scott of Another Planet. “You saw the impact last year at Dead and Company at Oracle Park.”

San Francisco Recreation and Parks said the concert series simply makes sense following a multi-day, multi-stage festival.

“It takes over a week to set up just to get us to Outside Lands and then tear down, so while we’re dismantling most of the infrastructure, why not leave enough for a single stage concert,” said Kat Anderson, president of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commissions.

And for providers, this step means more business.

“We see a lot of people who aren’t able to come to our restaurant, and they come here and know us by name, so it’s really cool,” said Viviana Montano, owner of El Garage.

“It’s an extension of what we did at Outside Lands. It’s a different crowd, too. We’re excited,” said Feldo Nartapura, owner of Sataysfied. “I think if we do it right and the crowd speaks for itself and we enjoy it, I think the city is ready to add a two- or three-day event into the mix.”
