Taylor Swift attracted over 337,000 visitors to vote.gov with her support for Kamala Harris

Taylor Swift’s contribution Support for Vice President Kamala Harris for the White House prompted at least 337,826 users to visit the vote.gov website on Tuesday, a sign of the potential impact their decision to speak out could have on the November election.

Vote.gov is operated by a federal agency called the General Services Administration in conjunction with the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. The site provides information about voter registration and voting and directs users to state websites where they can register.

In an Instagram post after the Presidential debate Swift wrote that she would vote for Harris and her Democratic running mate, Governor Tim Walz, and urged her fans to do their own research and voice their opinions in November.

“I have done my research and made my choice. Your research is entirely yours and the choice is yours. I want to say to first-time voters in particular: remember you must be registered to vote! I also find it much easier to vote early,” she wrote, sharing a custom link to vote.gov in a corresponding Instagram story.

A GSA spokesperson said that as of 2 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday, 337,826 users had visited vote.gov through Swift’s link. The spokesperson noted that new voters will ultimately have to register through their respective state’s website to vote.

Harris’ campaign quickly gained the support of one of the world’s most influential pop stars. The campaign soon began selling Harris-Walz friendship bracelets, the fashion accessory worn by millions of Swift fans on her Eras tour around the world. The bracelets were sold out by Wednesday.

Swift has proven in the past that she can get her followers to register to vote. In 2023, she urged her fans to register at vote.org and more than 35,000 people answered the call.

The Pennsylvania native first entered politics in 2018 when she endorsed Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen for the Tennessee Senate. “In the past, I have been reticent to publicly express my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world over the past two years, I now feel very differently about it,” Swift wrote at the time. Bredesen ultimately lost to Republican Marsha Blackburn.

In her speech supporting Harris, Swift wrote that the vice president is fighting “for the rights and causes that I believe need a fighter to represent them” and called her “a thoughtful, gifted leader.”

She captioned her post, “Taylor Swift, childless cat lady,” a reference to comments made by Senator JD Vance, former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate. In an interview in 2021Vance said the country was being run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are unhappy in their own lives.”

On Fox News on Wednesday, Vance questioned the impact of Swift’s support.

“We admire Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t think most Americans – whether they like her music or are fans of her or not – are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who, in my opinion, is fundamentally out of touch with the interests and issues of most Americans,” Vance said.
